Specialist in fuel assemblies – for many years now

Advanced Nuclear Fuels GmbH (ANF) is headquartered in Lingen. For 40 years, fuel assemblies have been manufactured here for pressurized and boiling water reactors in Germany and other European countries. 430 employees are working at the two ANF sites.

Fuel assembly fabrication in Lingen

The Lingen site has been manufacturing fuel assemblies for boiling and pressurized water reactors as well as special powder and pellet products for more than 40 years. Furthermore, the site has received orders for the disassembly and reassembly of unspent fuel assemblies, thus contributing to making the shutdown German nuclear power plants fuel-free. Specific competencies in the design and construction of manufacturing technologies are another pillar and contribute to a high production quality – and therefore safety in nuclear power plants also outside of Germany. ANF also ensures the education and training of radiation protection experts and other nuclear professionals. This knowledge and these competencies will still be needed in Germany even after the phase-out in 2022.

Component fabrication in Karlstein am Main

The Karlstein site has been manufacturing components for fuel assemblies and core parts for more than 50 years. Main products are spacers, head and bottom fittings, water passages for boiling water reactors and assembly parts such as end caps for fuel rods, rings, screws and other small parts for the worldwide market of AREVA NP.

Do you know what a fuel assembly is?

The fuel assemblies are the “heart” of a reactor where nuclear fission creates heat.

The fissile material and the resulting fission products, some of which are radioactive, are safely enclosed in the cladding tubes.

Depending on the type, a fuel assembly contains between 200 and 500 kilograms fuel. It consists of fuel rods which contain the nuclear fuel pellets. The fuel rods are held together by a support structure consisting of guide tubes, spacers, top and bottom part.

On average, the fuel assemblies remain inside the reactor for a period of 3 to 4 years. Every 12 to 24 months, between 20 and 50 percent of the fuel assemblies used inside the reactor core are replaced with new fuel assemblies.
