Innovation – Invest in the future
Research and development, as well as innovation have top priority for us. Why? It is due to these activities that we can provide state-of-the-art products and services to our customers. And keep the highest possible safety standards in nuclear power plants. AREVA GmbH in Germany alone spends five percent of annual turnover on order-independent research projects. This includes, for instance, cooperations with universities and research centers, but also sustainable advancements of the technological in-house competencies.
Promising innovations and new technologies
Innovation Award 2016 was granted
AREVA GmbH's Innovation Award has a long-standing tradition: it has been awarded since 1996. Key criteria are the degree of innovation and economic benefit of the ideas.
The 2016 winners:
- First winner: ”New, environmentally-friendly cleaning process for cooling towers and cooling circuits”. This solution for the cleaning of cooling towers in large power plants removes depostits on surfaces on which bacteria could grow which are hazardous to health. Parts of the deposits already come off while drying during downtime (mainly in the summer). The rest is dissolved in one step using a mixture of surfactants and mineral acid and is then disposed of via the regular sewage system.
- Second winner is “AZURo”. The innovative robot was developed in cooperation with Fraunhofer Institute and is used during dismantling of nuclear power plants for underwater disassembly and packing of reactor pressure vessel installations. The work stages, for which utmost precision is needed, can be realized much more efficiently and with less staff than with the conventional method using remote-controlled tools.
- Third winner is “Combustible Gas Sensor System“. CGSS extends the product spectrum for measuring of hydrogen content inside the containment and is a further development of the proven WS85 system. This development was motivated by the significantly higher requirements of the authorities for such systems since 2011. Compared to previous systems, CGSS offers a larger measuring range, also records the oxygen content and has temperature sensors. The new system can be upgraded in both pressurized and boiling water reactors.
The total of 39 inventions disclosed and 20 patent applications filed in 2016 demonstrates the innovative strength of AREVA GmbH. The patent portfolio currently encompasses 1.759 patents and patent applications.
The innovation potential of its employees is one of a company's major resources – this also holds true for AREVA GmbH. Each year we give out an award for the best innovations. We want to pursue our innovative course in the future: We therefore promote the timely and systematic transfer of our corporate nuclear expertise to the next generation of engineers.
Cooperation with universities
Innovations are triggered by new impulses. This is why AREVA GmbH works together closely with various universities and research centers, finances endowed chairs and promotes young talent.
