Uranium’s path: from the uranium mine to repository

The nuclear fuel cycle shows the entire path the fuel takes. It consists of three steps:

  • Front End: It includes the extraction of uranium ore, uranium conversion, uranium enrichment and fuel fabrication.
  • Next step: generation of power inside a reactor.
  • Back End: The spent fuel assemblies are removed from the reactor. They will either be reprocessed or stored in an interim or final repository.
